So my finishes out of my goals for this quarter?
Nothing...
I've got nothing...
I've hardly done any sewing these last few months.
I haven't posted anything in a month.
Man, I've been slacking!
And, I need to get those UFOs and WIPs out of the craft room...
What I have done:
I did make progress on little girl's baby shower memory quilt though... I was hoping to have that finished in the next couple days, but Halloween costumes are getting in the way...
(it's number 3 on my list)
I'm trying to decide the border set up... I have the blocks sewn, and the blue flange to break up the blocks from the borders.
But hey, at least it is progress!?!
Maybe I'll get it finished this next quarter, in time for Christmas?
Yeah... I said it, Christmas... Man this year has flown by!
Tell Me:
How has your UFOs and WIPs been coming along? Do you finish projects before you start new ones or do you set things aside for later?

The Foggy Foggy Forest - Crayon Melting Activity {Virtual Book Club for Kids}
Ok...
Now that Halloween is over and that craziness... I finally have had the opportunity to unload pictures from my camera and you know what that means? I finally can contribute my part to the Virtual Book Club for Kids blog hop! Yay! You know, cause the post title didn't hint to that already! :)
I had this idea in my head to do a 'letters of your name' book with crayon and wax paper... Yeah, it didn't work out that way! Instead it just turned into a 'letters of your name' melting crayon activity. Nikolai thought it was cool! That's all I can hope for! :)
First off, Foggy, Foggy Forest is great with the vellum pages! Nikolai loved it! I first wanted to do something with predictions and inference, but just left that to when we were reading the story. He had so much fun 'guessing' what the next page was going to be until we read through it so many times, he was jumping for joy with the next part! Sequencing probably would have been great for this activity too, but alas, the book is back at the library having needed to be returned...
Materials:
- Crayon shavings: I used a crayon sharpener on all our dull crayons, even Nikolai helped a little bit but most of it was done during nap time
- paper: for the letters, I used plain paper but you can use cardstock or any kind you prefer. I had these cut prior
- wax paper
- glue stick (optional): we used this to trace the letters and to keep the crayon shavings to stick to the paper. I shook off excess shavings back onto the rest
- Iron: and board, with which to melt the crayons
- paper towels: to protect your ironing board and iron from the melting wax and dye
- scissors: to cut out the letters
- string/yarn: for stringing the letters to make a banner
Steps:
1. Cut out wax paper big enough to fold over and sandwich the letter. Place the letter down on one side (inside) but do not sandwich yet.

2. We traced the letter with glue, but honestly, following the line with something else (like a finger) works too.) Nikolai giggled, he thought it was funny, but then was really serious! Silly kid!

3. Using pincer fingers, pinch some crayon shavings and place on the letter. Honestly, not much is needed. We barely but some on the letters and I had to iron the melted wax to the edges of the letters and got some on my board, eek! I also tried to keep excess off the wax paper, this is where the glue came in, I just lightly tapped it back onto the plate.
4. Fold over the wax paper to sandwich the letter.
5. Place a paper towel on your board, sandwich on that, then another paper towel. This will not only protect your iron, but your board as well!

6. Press your letter. I do not suggest to actually iron unless you see areas that may need it. just put the iron down, press, lift then move.
*Nikolai just helped hold the iron, I do not advise to let your child do the ironing. Always watch your children around heated items.
7. Let the letter cool then cut! Nikolai sometimes helped cut by hand-over-hand.
8. If you want to make a banner to display your name, then string them onto yarn or twine. Secure the letter onto it's spot using knots. I haven't done this yet. Cannot decide on yarn or twine as it is going to be decoration for his 3rd birthday in December!
Even though this did not turn out how I envisioned it in my head, it still came out pretty great. I even used all the crayon shavings with none left over! Nikolai is proud of his name and I need to hurry up and get it hanging. He wants it over his bedroom closet door. That is fine by me! I love that he wants it on display! :)

Here Are My Hands: Tracing Activity {Virtual Book Club for Kids}
I actually debated a lot about whether to share this one or not. One: it was not a huge hit at our house. Two: we wanted to take it further (meaning Nikolai) and we just for some reason didn't...
But instead I decided that someone might have more fun, and the kids may enjoy this.
see you next time,
But instead I decided that someone might have more fun, and the kids may enjoy this.
We read the latest book we got from the library, "Here Are My Hands" by Bill Martin Jr... Then I traced Nikolai on the paper. He wanted to trace me too... Perhaps we shall still do that, tomorrow is another day! And he wants to trace sister. That ended up being a bomb, she would not stay still and was just overall not happy with that idea! Though, I found it a little humorous! :)
I have that lovely old printer paper. A whole box of it that I got from one of the schools I left back in '08... The box is still mostly full, but what a perfect way to use some of it!
What you need
- Paper
- crayons
- tape (or some way to hold the papers together if you don't have the old printer paper)
Layout the paper and tape together,
Lay down on paper and trace around them. We do this with hands all the time, but thought it would be fun with his whole body...
We colored and pointed to the different parts of the body as we read. A totally different experience on paper!

Listen to the Rain: Make a Rain Stick {Virtual Book Club for Kids}
I picked up some more of Bill Martin Jr books from the library and decided to do another activity.
One book we picked up is Listen to the Rain. Since monsoon season just ended for us here, this book was perfect! We decided to make a rain stick!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear: Fun With Colors {Virtual Book Club}
When I first saw this I knew I wanted to follow it...
Then I saw that others could participate too and I knew I wanted to join in on the Blog Hopping fun!
This month's featured author is Bill Martin Jr. and we have several Bill Martin Jr. books here in our home. So far our favorites are "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", "Panda Bear, Panda Bear" and "Baby Bear, Baby Bear". Nikolai can pretty much recite "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" if given the color. I discovered that when shopping at Joann's for my long awaiting DIY Color-Sorting Mat project. I say long awaited because Nikolai wanted me to finish it and I wanted to finish it! It goes right along with him wanting to find matches for everything and asking "what's this favorite color?"
So this is what I have to share with you for this month's featured author!
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?
Color Sorting, Matching and a DIY Board Game
Color Sorting and Matching
Using the color sorting mat (either make your own or use squares of construction paper, I am all about doing what you can with what you already have) sort out objects like buttons, felt, beads, etc into the colors talking about the name of the color. Nikolai loves doing this and can last about 15 to 20 minutes just sorting out these objects! Yay!
We then incorporated a spinner that I had made previously (using cardboard, the printout I made, glue, a brad and washer) and pointed to the matching color (and placed anymore unsorted objects onto that color) to the animal from Brown Bear, Brown Bear. It was great fun spinning the spinner and pointing to the matching color, naming the color and the animal, and had to throw in animal sounds too!
We (of course) had to move this mat to the floor. Nikolai was tired of sitting at the table and since Samara was sleeping (not like she is mobile yet) I figured "why not? It's more comfortable on the floor anyway.'" Nikolai went around looking for toys that matched the colors, "look mommy! they match!" He was so excited to find matches.
DIY Board Game
One of the things I wanted to go with the spinner was a game. I have been waiting to be able to teach little man to play a board game and, though he is not quite ready yet, this was a perfect opportunity to get him started! The link has what I used in PDF format along with my thoughts on different ways to play...
We are still working on this part of what I have to share with you. We have fun each time we play this game and it changes every time! That is one of the things that I love about stuff like this, they are so versatile!
We talked about colors as we I colored the squares, though he picked out the colors. He helped color the manila folder too. When we played, we mostly just matched the animals to either the drawn card or the spinner.

Hello, Summer!
It's done. School is over and so the summer has begun! It was a good last couple of weeks of school, full of meetings, IEPs, and getting everything of mine out of the classroom and home. I will miss it there. I will miss the kids, the teachers, the people. I will have to go back and visit them when I can; show off the baby. I am sure that if I do not, I will hear about it!
It has been a while since I last posted! Nikolai and I went to the zoo, not this past weekend but the one before, with my friend Meghan and her two kiddos. It was the first time we tried to feed the giraffes and the ducks. Nikolai did well with feeding the ducks. I think he was a little scared to feed the giraffe!

Ideas for Baby Girl's Quilt
I have been brainstorming pinterest for ideas for a quilt for baby girl. I am thinking something with HST or some sort of chevron design. I really like the chevron design. But then, who doesn't? It is so extremely popular right now it seems. But Brandon thinks it is a bit boring. But who knows what I will end up doing?

Almost Here...
Christmas is almost here, and with that Nikolai's birthday! So it has been pretty crazy around here just trying to clean house before Saturday. Brandon is super stressed because he does not want to have the birthday part at the house. I don't feel like planning and paying to have it somewhere else. So here at the house we are currently in is where it will be, on Saturday. So soon...

Dylan's Busy Book
I am so excited about how this turned out, and I even finished it by her birthday party! If you didn't see my fiasco of attempting to cut fabric with the cricut (testing it so I could make a quiet book), you can read those posts here for part 1, and here for part 2.It works, though I would make some changes. It looks so cute. I wish that I knew how well Dylan likes it. At least I know she uses it. My mom said she has difficulty pronouncing busy and it comes out as Disney. So she says Dylan's Disney book. Cute. If she asks for it, that must mean that she likes it right? Well, I also added two coloring book, 12 colored pencils, and a pack of 8 Ariel the little mermaid crayons that she colored with at our house. Gotta love stuff from the dollar bins at the stores! :) So I wrote down the measurements of the fabrics so I could share. :)
